Who in the Netherlands is not familiar with the Zwaluw brand? Zwaluw matches in the well-known box are indispensable in the Dutch supermarket shelf. According to many, the most beautiful and most authentic A-brand in the Netherlands. Its history goes back to Sweden, at the end of the 19th century. There were over 130 match factories throughout Sweden at the time. One of these was in Uddevalla, which was taken over by Swedish Match around 1960. Today, Swedish Match Zwaluw Industries AB (SMI) is the only major player in Europe. In addition, the group also bundled numerous importers and local factories outside Sweden over the years, including the Amsterdam importer J.W. Attema & Co. This company introduced Zwaluw, then still produced in the Uddevalla Tändsticksfabrik, to the Dutch market in 1895. Attema thus formed the basis of a brand that has been available on the Dutch market for 125 years.

Made in Sweden

Sweden is still the preeminent country for producing matches. First of all, there is plenty of aspen (poplar) wood available. This type of wood has the ideal characteristics.
